Age Verification Firm Hack May Have Leaked 70k User ID Photos, Says Discord

The hugely popular social platform Discord has revealed that official ID photos belonging to about 70,000 users may have been leaked following a cyber attack.

Discord says that, while its own platform was not breached, hackers did target a third-party service provider which helps to verify the age of its users.

According to a press release on Discord’s website, the potentially leaked data could have included personal information and credit card details, along with messages exchanged with Discord’s customer support and trust & safety teams.

Discord, a networking hub for players to chat and share files within the gaming community, has over 200 million monthly users worldwide.

The platform began implementing age-check measures (like face scans and ID photo uploads for some users) earlier this year, in response to concerns that some of its servers were being used to distribute adult and extreme content.

“Discord recently discovered an incident where an unauthorised party compromised one of our third-party vendors,” the press release said.

“Of the accounts impacted globally, we have identified approximately 70,000 users that may have had government-ID photos exposed, which our vendor used to review age-related appeals.”

The press release said that no full credit card numbers, CCV codes, passwords, or messages and activity beyond what users may have discussed with Discord customer support was leaked.

Discord, it added, immediately revoked the customer support provider’s access to the system targeted in the breach, has contacted all impacted users, and is working with law enforcement to investigate the matter.
